In 1915 Edgar Lee Master’s sensational book of poetry, Spoon River Anthology, was published. In it, he brought back from the grave 212 residents of the fictitious Spoon River to reveal their fascinating secrets and perspectives on life. In this Readers’ Theater play, 36 of the most interesting of Masters’ characters share heartaches, love affairs, loneliness, heroism, tender relationships and humorous yarns in a moving and thoughtful performance, told in splendid poetry and accompanied by the songs of Stephen Foster.
